Keeping Down Odors At The Dump Pumps up Renewable Energy
June 23rd, 2009MIO Recipe Round-Up Contest
June 18th, 2009The Made In Oklahoma Coalition wants to get the word out…buying products made in our state has a big economic impact.
Oklahoma food manufacturers generate more than $2.5 billion in sales every year.
And the MIO Coalition is working to increase those numbers.
One of the ways of doing that is through the annual Recipe Roundup Cooking Contest.

It’s not too hard to find Made In Oklahoma products at any local grocery store.
And buying those products help maintain a healthy economy in our state.
“Because the tax revenue comes back to the state Shawnee Mills for example is a company out of Shawnee Oklahoma they celebrated their centinnial 100-year-old company that makes flour, cornbreads when you buy their product the tax dollars stay in the state,” said Richard Wasson with the Made In Oklahoma Coalition.
To raise awareness for Oklahoma made products the coaltion hosts an annual cooking contest.

Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses
June 18th, 2009High temperatures and humidity can be life-threatening for people of any age or level of health, although children under the age of four and the elderly are at highest risk. Their bodies are less able to cope with the heat.
EMSA recommends the following precautions for everyone to prevent heat related illnesses.
1. Reduce outdoor activity.
2. Avoid exercise during the heat of the day.
3. Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcohol, sugary and/or caffeinated beverages.
4. Eat smaller, more frequent meals instead of three large meals a day.
5. Wear lightweight, light colored clothing.
It is also a good idea for the elderly to stay inside air conditioned buildings. If there is no air conditioning in the home the elderly should go to a senior center, library mall or other public place that is air conditioned during the heat of the day. We’re also advised to check on elderly family and neighbors often especially if they are likely to avoid turning on the air conditioning because they fear it is too expensive to run.
Parents need to frequently remind children to take water breaks and rest breaks in the shade if they are playing outside.
