Monday, May 17th on a two to one vote Pawnee County Commissioners put a halt to plans to build and operate a recycling plant and landfill.
Commissioner Dale Vance was the only yes vote. He backed the plan calling it a new eight to ten million dollar a year revenue source for the county which has a flat tax base and rising expenses. He says the plant would have created as many as 145 jobs with a $1.3 million dollar annual payroll.
Opponents of the plant say County Commissioners did not answer their questions about the project at community meetings and they fear trash hauled into the recycling plant and landfill could pollute the air and water in Pawnee County.
